Rammang-Rammang is a very popular destination for a day tour in Makassar. The view is breathtaking. It's a combination of limestone hills, river, village, and rice fields at one place. Around this area there are also other interesting places to visit like stone garden, and a prehistoric cave found in 1950s.


What to expect

Your tour will begin with a pick up from Sultan Hasanuddin airport or your hotel at 8 am. Then we will head to Rammang-Rammang dock  1 to take the boat to Rammang-Rammang village.

The boat ride is around 20 minutes to Rammang-Rammang village. It's a village with 17 houses surrounded by limestone hills. Enjoy the fresh air, sound of the birds, and walking along rice fields and fish ponds.

Then we will do light trekking to Padang Ammarrung hill where you can enjoy the view of Rammang-Rammang village from the top of the hill with a cup of coffee or  a coconut served by a local old couple.

After that we will go by boat to dock 2 then continue trekking to Kunang-kunang cave. They named it Kunang-kunang or fireflies in English, because the stalactites and stalagmites are glittering.

Then we will have lunch in Eco Lodge Cafe. They serve western and local food for a reasonable price. You can have lunch while enjoying the beautiful view of Pute river and lime stone hills.

After that we will go to Stone Garden. Here we can see hundred of karsts with different sizes and unique shapes. This Stone Garden is the third biggest in the world, after the first one in Tsingy and the second one in Shilin.

Finish the tour with a visit to Leang-Leang prehistoric cave. Please notice that Leang-Leang prehistoric cave only opens until 5 pm, so if we start the tour late we can visit it first.


Hand Stencils and Deer Hog Painting in Leang-Leang

In Leang-leang you will see 27 hand stencils and a deer hog painting in Pettakere Cave. This Hand stencils and painting was made around 5000 years ago.

Beside the Pettakere cave we can also go to information center to see the fossil replica of the first human that they found in Leang Jarie. This fossil is 2750 years old.
And you can also see a neon artwork created by Craig A. Kraft that inspired by prehistoric painting in Jing cave.

DAMRI bus to airport schedule:

  • Starts at 7 am until 5 pm from Ribura'ne street. Depart every 30 minutes. It will take around 30 to 60 minutes to get to the airport.

Are you looking for a thing to do in Makassar while you are waiting for your bus to Toraja or you just want to escape the city, then our day tour can be a perfect option for you. There are many things to do for a day tour near Makassar. One of them is visiting Malino. It's located around 1500 meters above the sea level so it has some nice waterfalls, tea plantations, or you can just enjoy the fresh air of the mountains.


What to expect

Pick up at your hotel at 8 am. At around 10.30 am we will arrive in Takapala waterfall. Then we will do trekking from the parking area to Takapala waterfall.

After that we will have lunch in Pattiroang cafe. Pattiroang cafe is an aesthetic cafe made from bamboo and wood. Here you can have lunch with mountains and rice terraces view.  





Next, we will visit Malino Highlands to enjoy the view of tea plantation. Then we will do trekking down the hill along the tea plantation to mini zoo, then to flower garden.

Then we will stop at Malino traditional market. Here you can see the activities of local people selling local products such as vegetables, fruits, plants, and popular snacks such as dodol and teng-teng which are the trademark of Malino.

Tana Toraja is one regency in South Sulawesi with Makale as the capital. It's famous not just because  it's culture, but also with the beautiful nature. In 2008, North Toraja was officially created with Rantepao as it's capital. Most of the tourists will stay in Rantepao because it's strategic location.  Rantepao is located around 314 km from Makassar.

When to Get There




The best time to visit Toraja will be around June until October. June and July is harvest time then August until October there are many funeral ceremonies. The reason why there are many funeral ceremonies at those months because it's school holiday so there are many families and relatives come to visit.

Getting There

  • Flight
There was a flight from Trans Nusa from Makassar to Toraja but started from November 2017 they stopped flying there. Another option is to fly to Bua airport in Palopo. Then you can rent a car to Rantepao. It takes around 2 hours to get to Rantepao from Bua airport.

  • Bus
Busses leave twice a day from Makassar to Toraja. You can choose the morning bus or the overnight bus. The morning busses leave at 9 am and the overnight busses leave at 9 pm from Daya Terminal. There are many bus operators such as Metro Permai, Primadona, Bintang Prima, Litha. Co, etc. The bus fare from Makassar to Makale or Rantepao starts from IDR 120,000 and can be more expensive depends with the type of the bus. It takes around 10 hours from Makassar to Rantepao. Let the driver know your hotel and they will drop you off there.

  • Rent a car with a driver.
We provide a car with English speaking driver as an option to you. It costs IDR 1,500,000 for a drop off from your hotel or Sultan Hasanuddin airport to Toraja or IDR 750,000/ day (including driver and gasoline, and driver's accomodation). Around Toraja


  • Lemo



Located 9 km south of Rantepao, Lemo stone graves are still being used by the locals to bury the dead. From far away, you can see wooden effigies or locally known as tau-tau with colorfull dress.


  • Londa



Londa is located 7 km south of Rantepao. To get to the tomb cave, we must descend number of stairs and we will need to rent a lantern from the loccals.

  • Kete Kesu



Kete Kesu is a village with 6 traditional houses called Tongkonan and 12 rice barns called Alang.  It is located 4 km south east of Rantepao. Beside of the beautiful houses, you can also see grave behind the Tongkonan houses.

There are short trekking around Batutumonga and long trekking route. Here are some populer longer routes:

  • Batutumonga-Lokomata-Pangala-Baruppu-Pulu Pulu-Sapan
  • Pangala-Bolokan-Bittuang
  • Saddan-Sapan-Pulu Pulu-Baruppu-Pangala

Maros is a regency near Makassar that offers many beautiful places. While you are in Maros, you should visit all of the tourism spots. Below are the list of entrance fees in Maros regency for foreigners:

There are no hotels in Rammang Rammang area, so if you want to stay overnight in Rammang Rammang, there are only homestays like Eco Lodge, and Nasrul House. 


Rammang Rammang Eco Lodge

Rammmang Rammang Eco Lodge is an accomodation in Rammang Rammang area. It's really close from dock 2 and you can reach it by foot.
It's IDR 450,000 for a lodge with a fan (including breakfast). The room is for 2 people. If there are 3 people in one lodge then you must pay for an extra bed.

- By online taxi such as Grab car/ Go car to dock 2 Rammang-rammang. The staff of Eco Lodge Rammang-rammang will pick you up by a boat. 
- By bus (DAMRI) to the main road (Perintis Kemerdekaan street) then cross the road and take public car to Bosowa cement factory and take ojek to dock 2. The staff of Eco Lodge Rammang-rammang will pick you up by a boat. 
- By private car with driver from Sultan Hasanuddin airport. We offer transfer service from Sultan Hasanuddin airport to Eco Lodge Rammang-rammang. Please contact us for futher info.
