Makassar or formerly known as Ujung Pandang is the capital of South Sulawesi.   • Losari Beach  


Losari beach is a favourite place for local Makassar people to spend time with families or friends to see the sunset. At the background you can see the 99 domes mosque.There are many food stalls around if you want to enjoy the sunset with some local dessert and drinks. The popular one will be "Pisang Epe" or grilled banana with brown sugar and gratis coconut. You can also find other famous dishes of Makassar from the restaurant around Losari beach.

  • Fort Rotterdam

It was built by the 9th King of Gowa. It has a shape of a turtle if you see from above. After Bongaya treaty, Gowa Kingdom must give this fort to The Dutch and they re built the fort as we can see now. Here you can see some buildings with Portuguese architecture and you can also visit a museum that shows the history of Makassar.

  • Paotere Harbour

This harbour starting to use in 1909 and still operating until nowadays. Here you can see many traditional boats that transporting things from Makassar to islands around Makassar. This attracts photograper to hunt some photos here. Beside that you can also see fishermen upload their catch from the boat.

  • Terong Traditional Market

Starting to operate in 1960, Terong market supplies many provinces in Sulawesi, western part of Indonesia, and eastern part of Indonesia. Here you can see local people selling rice, vegetables, fruits, spices, fishes, meats, and many more.

  • Lae-lae Island

Lae-lae island is located 1,5 km from Makassar. This island was inhabited by Japanese soldier during World War 2. Now this island is inhabited by around 2000 people. On this island you can watch sunset, swimming, fishing, etc. 

How to get to Lae-lae island:
You can take a shared boat from Kayu Bangkoa Port. It's around Rp. 15.000- Rp. 20.000 one way. To get to Kayu Bangkoa Port, you can just walk from Fort Rotterdam. 

  • Samalona Island

Samalona island is part of Spermonde Archipelago. It's llocated around 6,9 km from the coast in front of Fort Rotterdam. It takes only around 30 minutes to get to this island, that's why it becomes local people's favourite place for holiday. In the past this island was used as a base to attack Benteng Ujung Pandang or now known as Fort Rotterdam. There are also 7 ship wrecks from World War 2 around this island. Samalona island is inhabited by 7 families. 

Here you can swim in the crystal clear water, snorkeling, dive or just sunbathing on the beach. If you are hungry, you can find some food stalls selling fishes, instant noodles, and some snacks. They also provide coffee, tea, and beer. If you want to stay overnight, there are some houses to rent. 

How to get to Samalona island:
You can charter a boat from Popsa Port. It's around Rp. 600.000 both ways. To get to Popsa Port, you can just cross the street from Fort Rotterdam. 


  • Kodingareng Keke Island

Kodingareng Keke one of many islands in Spermonde Archipelago. Located around 14 km from Makassar. This island is uninhabited, but at daytime, many fishermen come to have rest here. 
Here you can camp, hang a hammock, snorkeling, swimming, etc. Make sure you bring some food and drink because there are no sellers here. 

How to get to Kodingareng Keke island:
You can charter aboat from Popsa Port. It's around Rp. 900.000 both ways. To get to Popsa Port, you can just cross the street from Fort Rotterdam. 

  • Lego-lego Food Court

Lego-lego food court is located in Center Point of Indonesia. Near 99 domes mosque.  Here is not just a place to find food and drinks but also a place to spend time with family because it has big open space and play ground.

  • 99 Domes Mosque

Like it's name, this mosque has 99 domes. Why 99 domes? Because it's inspired by "Asmaul Husna" or God names. In Islam God has 99 names. It's located near the sea in Center Point of Indonesia. Really close to Lego-lego food court. This mosque can host until 13.000 people.

  • Pantai Indah Bosowa

Indah Bosowa Beach or Pantai Indah Bosowa is popular for teenagers in Makassar.  It's only 6 km from Losari Beach so many people go here. Beside watching sunset, here you can swim, casing, there is also banana boat for max. 5 people. If you are hungry, there are some cafes on the beach area. There are also some huts/ gazebos for rent if you need them.

  • Akkarena Beach

Akkarena beach is located in Tanjung Bunga areaarea,  around 6 km from Losari beach. This beach was opened for public in 1998. Beside swimming, here you can watch sunset while enjoying food or drink in some cafes in the area. You can also do swimming and some water Sport activities.

  • Somba Opu Street

Somba Opu street is a popular area to buy souvenirs from Makassar. Makassar is famous with good medicated oils, cajuput oils, snacks, coffee and fabrics. Not just that, you can also buy t-shirts, magnets, Tongkonan house model, Phinisi boat model on this street.

How to get to Somba Opu street:

  • Trans Studio Mall

If you are in Makassar and you need to buy some stuffs for your travelling, then Trans Studio Mall is the best options. If you want to work with your laptop, or just spending time at coffeeshop there are some coffeeshop like Starbucks, Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, etc.

  • Museum Kota Makassar

Museum Kota Makassar was built in 1918. It was the office of the first mayor of Makassar, Mr. D. J. Hambrink before the government turn it into a museum in 2000. Here you can see cannon, cannonball, photo of Queen Wilhelmina, coins,  photos of mayors of Makassar, maps of Makassar in 16th century, and many more.

  • Tallo Kings Cemetery Complex

Tallo Kingdom was founded in the middle of 15th century when  The 6th king of Gowa, Tunatangka'lopi died. His son, Batara Gowa Tuminanga ri Paralakkena became the 7th king of Gowa, while his brother Karaeng Loe di Sero ruled part of the region as first king of Tallo kingdom. The two kingdoms of Tallo and Gowa subsequently engaged each other in combat and competition, after an agreement was reached, the two kingdoms reunited and it's called Gowa-Tallo kingdom.

  • Prince Diponegoro Cemetery

Prince Diponegoro was born in Jogjakarta, 11th of November 1785. His father was Sultan Hamengkubuwono III.  He led the war against colonialism in Java from 1825-1830. After his defeat, he was captured and exiled to Manado. After seberapa years in Manado, he was moved to Fort Rotterdam in Makassar. He then died in Makassar at the age of 69 years old.

  • Bugis Waterpark

Bugis Waterpark is the biggest waterpark in the eastern part of Indonesia. There are many attractions like Turbolance, Space Boat, Kids Pool, Pinisi Slide, and many more.

  • Lantebung Mangrove Forest

Lantebung mangrove forest has a colourful wooden bridge that goes through Mangrove forest until the pier. Here you can enjoy beautifull view of the mangrove forest, the sea, see local people looking for crabs, and hunting good photos.

  • Somba Opu Fort


Somba Opu fort is located in Daeng Tata street, in Gowa regency. This fort was built by the 9th king of Gowa,  Daeng Matanre Tumapa'risi Kallonna and finished under the 14th king of Gowa. In the 16th century, it was a centre for trading spices that was visited by Asian and European traders. 
After VOC and alliances attacked in 14th of June 1669 this fort was destroyed and only some walls remaining until now. 
Beside Somba Opu Fort, you can also see 24 traditional houses from different ethnic in South Sulawesi.

  • Sheikh Yusuf Tomb

Sheikh Yusuf was born in Gowa, 3rd of July 1626. Sheikh Yusuf started to learn about Islam when he was 15 years old in Cikoang. After got back from Cikoang, he got married and then went to Banten, Aceh, and Yaman to learn more about Islam. After the defeat of Gowa Sultanate, he moved to Banten in 1669. There he helped Sultan Ageng to fight against VOC until he was captured and exiled to Cirebon, then to Srilanka then to Cape of Good Hope, South Africa and died there. Sultan Abdul Jalil, the 18th king of Gowa then negotiated with VOC to bring Sheikh Yusuf body back to Makassar.

  • Kings of Gowa Cemetery Complex

Kings of Gowa cemetery complex is located on a hill in Somba Opu district, Gowa. There are 21 cemeteries in this complex including Sultan Alauddin and Sultan Hasanuddin tombs. In this complex you can find 4 types of cemeteries.

  • Balla Lompoa Museum

Balla Lompoa Museum is located in K. H. Wahid Hasyim street in Gowa. This museum which used to be a palace was built in 1936 by the 31st king of Gowa. After the 36th king of Gowa moved to Makassar, the palace changed its function in to a Museum. 

Here you can see historical things from Gowa kingdom since the 10th century such as traditional weapons, traditional costumes, and many other items.

  • Rammang-rammang 


Rammang-rammang is located around 37 km from Makassar. It's an area in the middle of karst mountains in Bantimurung Bulusaraung national park. The best way to explore the area is by a motorized boat. You can visit Kampung Laku stone garden, Kunang-kunang cave, Telaga Bidadari, and the famous Berua village. 
Since it's not really far from Makassar, you can do this trip as a one day trip.

  • Bantimurung Waterfall


Bantimurung waterfall is located in Bantimurung district, Maros. Around 40 km or one hour from Makassar. Bantimurung waterfall is located not far from Leang-leang prehistoric cave and Rammang-rammang, so you can visit these places on a one day tour. 
British naturalist, Alfred Russel Wallace was in Maros between July-November 1857. He visited Bantimurung waterfall by horse around September and found 6 species of butterfly around Bantimurung. 

Beside waterfall, you can also see butterflies, two caves, and a hanging bridge. 

How to get to Bantimurung:

  • Leang-leang Archeological Park


Leang-leang archeological park is located around 45 km from Makassar. Leang-leang means caves in Makassar language. Here there are two caves and were found by H. R. van Heekeren.  In those caves you can see a pig painting and some hand stencills. These paintings estimated to be 5000 years old. 

How to get to Leang-leang archeological park:

  • Takapala Waterfall


Takapala waterfall is located in Tinggimoncong district, Gowa Regency. It's around 75 km from Makassar so you can still do it as an excursion. Near Takapala waterfall, there are many things to visit such as Ketemu Jodoh waterfall, pine forest, Malino traditional market, and Malino highlands. 

How to get to Takapala waterfall:

  • Ketemu Jodoh Waterfall

Also located in Tinggimoncong district in Gowa Regency, Ketemu Jodoh waterfall hasil two story and each story is around 10 meters height. This waterfall is close to Takapala waterfall.

  • Malino Highlands


Malino Highlands is located around 80 km from Makassar. Malino Highlands offers a beautifull scenery of tea plantation and mountains at 1200 meters from sea level. Here you can also see mini zoo, and garden with many different flowers. Another thing to do is riding a horse and enjoying a cup of hot tea at Green Pekoe cafe. 

How to get to Malino Highlands:

Tana Toraja in the north part of South Sulawesi is a popular place amongst the travellers that visiting South Sulawesi. Formerly Tana Toraja could be reached after 9-10 hours by car/ bus, but now you can fly from Makassar to Toraja because there is a flight from Makassar (UPG) to Toraja (TRT). 

Toraja new airport is located in Mangkendek, Tana Toraja Regency, South Sulawesi. It was built to replace Pongtiku airport. There is only one company that flies to Toraja Airport. Wings Air flies from Makassar to Toraja and Toraja to Makassar every Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. The flight from Makassar to Toraja takes 55 minutes. 

Toraja Airport is around 30 km from Rantepao, the capital of North Toraja. There is no public transport in Toraja Airport, make sure you book a pick up before you fly to Toraja Airport.

Tentena is located in Central Sulawesi, between Ampana and Rantepao, North Toraja. Tentena situated at the northern end of Poso Lake and it has some tourist attractions that worth to visit. That's why many tourists do a stop over in Tentena before they continue the trip to Rantepao. 

There are some options for transport from Tentena to Rantepao, North Toraja. They are:

  • Public bus from Tentena to Toraja
Busses from Palu that goes to Rantepao will do a stop around 4 pm everyday in Pusalemba Bus Terminal before they continue the trip to Rantepao. Please let us know if you need any help to book bus tickets. 

  • Private car with driver  from Tentena to Toraja
If you don't want to take the public bus, then a private car with driver from Tentena to Rantepao is another option for you. Please let us know, if you need a private car with driver from Tentena to Rantepao, North Toraja.

South Sulawesi Tour 9 Days 8 Nights Itinerary:

Day 1:  Rammang-rammang Tour (L)

Pick up at Sultan Hasanuddin airport/ hotel in Makassar then proceed to Leang-leang prehistoric park. In Leang-leang you will see 27 hand stencils and a deer hog painting in Pettakere Cave. This hand stencils and painting was made around 5000 years ago.

Beside the Pettakere cave we can also go to information center to see the fossil replica of the first human that they found in Leang Jarie. This fossil is 2750 years old.

Here you can also see photos of rock art paintings from caves around Maros and Pangkep karst, including the 44.500 year old painting in Leang Tedongnge.

After Leang-leang, we will continue to our accomodation in Rammang-rammang. After check-in at Eco Lodge, then we have lunch in Eco Lodge. After that we'll walk to Kunang-kunang cave, then we go to Taman Batu Kampung Laku then to Berua village. The boat ride to Berua village is around 20 minutes. Berua village is a village with 17 houses surrounded by limestone hills. Enjoy the fresh air, sound of the birds, and walking along rice fields and fish ponds. Back to accomodation then free program.

Day 2: Rammang-rammang - Toraja

After breakfast then we will go to Toraja. Driving to Toraja takes around 9-10 hours with some stops. First stop will be for lunch in D'Carlos Cafe Pare-pare or other places around. At D'Carlos Cafe you can order local Dishes that is not easy to find anywhere else. Next stop is in Buntu Kabobong or Erotic Mountain, Enrekang for a cup of coffee or tea then continue to Toraja. Arrive in the hotel then free program.

Day 3: Toraja Full Day Tour (B,L)

After breakfast We will go to the south part of Toraja, tour starts at 9 am. First we will visit Lemo which is an ancient grave with tau-tau on the cliff. Then we continue to Buntu Burake. The view from this hill is so beautiful. You can see mountains and Makale town, the capital of Tana Toraja. Beside that you can see Jesus Statue here.

After that we will have lunch in Panorama restaurant. After lunch we will go to Kote baby grave. In Toraja, they put dead babies inside the trees. After that we will visit Tampangallo, a cave grave with many old wooden coffins (erong) and old effigies.

Then last stop will be Kete Kesu. A traditional village that has 6 traditional houses (Tongkonan) and 12 rice storages (Alang). Some of the houses are around 300 years old. There are also modern grave (Patane), hanging grave, and cave grave. Back to hotel then free program.

Day 4: Toraja Full Day Tour (B,L)

We will go to the north part of Toraja, tour starts at 9 am. First we will visit Bolu market. Here you can see livestock market where they sell water buffaloes, pigs, roosters and we can also see the traditonal market.

After that we will stop to see beautiful rice terraces in Tinimbayo then continue to Batutumonga for lunch with the view of rice field and the view of Rantepao from above. We will have lunch in a local restaurant. After lunch we'll have trekking along the rice field.

Then we will go to Bori to see a field for funeral ceremony with 102 menhirs. Each stone represents a different funeral. Here you can also see stone grave and baby grave.
Back to hotel then free program.

Day 5: Toraja - Sengkang (B,L)

After breakfast then leave to Sengkang with some stops on the way. Lunch will be served in a local restaurant. After arrive in Sengkang, check-in in Amira Guesthouse.  After check-in, we go to take the boat to Tempe Lake to see local fishermen that live on floating houses. On the way to floating houses, we can see fishermen doing their job and some birds spesies.
You can enjoy sunset view from the floating house with some cups of tea and fried bananas. Back to hotel then free program.

Day 6: Sengkang - Bira (B,L)

After breakfast, we will leave to Tanjung Bira.  Tanjung Bira is around 220 km from Sengkang.
Lunch will be served at a local restaurant.
Arrive afternoon in Bira then free program.

Day 7: Kajang Tribe Tour & Apparalang Cliff (B,L)

After breakfast we will visit Kajang tribe. This tribe has kept their tradition for many generations. To enter this sacred village, we must wear black clothes and black sarung. Not just that, we must also walk barefeet in the village. After that we will have lunch at a local restaurant then head to Apparalang cliff.
Back to hotel then free program.

Day 8: Kambing Island - Liukang Loe Island - Passohara Cave - Boat Making Village(B,L)

After breakfast at the hotel, we will go to Kambing island and Liukang island for snorkeling, swimming, or sunbathing. We will have lunch at a local restaurant on Liukang Loe island. After lunch we will head back to the hotel then we go to boat making village. There are some ship building villages that involves mystical beliefs and mythology during boat building process. Back to hotel then free program.

Day 9 : Tanjung Bira - Makassar (B,L)

Check out at 9 am then continue to Makassar. We will have lunch in local restaurant then continue to the airport or your hotel in Makassar.

Note: 

  • This program is flexible and without visiting a funeral ceremony. If you want to see a funeral ceremony please let us know in advance so we can find an information about schedule of funeral ceremonies that happen to be held when you'll be here.
  • A moderate amount of walking is involved

Toraja was a name given by Buginese people to people that live in Toraja. It comes from two words, tau means people and riaja  means uphills. Even now most of Torajanese are christian but they still practice the old belief system or "aluk to dolo".

Most Torajanese live in Tana Toraja and North Toraja.Makale is the capital of Tana Toraja and Rantepao is the capital of North Toraja. Most tourists stay in Rantepao because it's closer to many tourist destinations. 

How to get  to Rantepao, Toraja from Makassar


  • By public transport (bus)
There are many bus companies that go to Rantepao, Toraja. Metro Permai, Primadona, Bintang Timur, Bintang Prima, Borlindo, Litha, Alam Indah, etc. Some bus companies leave twice a day from Daya Terminal in Makassar, one that we know leave twice a day from Daya Terminal in Makassar is Metro Permai. First at 9 am and second at 8 pm. It takes around 9-10 hours to get to Toraja with 2-3 stops for coffee break/ lunch/ dinner and for rest room.

To take these busses you can go to Terminal Daya which is located around 18 km from the downtown.

  • By airplane via Toraja Airport
There is only one company that flies to Toraja Airport. Wings Air flies from Sultan Hasanuddin airport in Makassar to Toraja airport and Toraja airport to Sultan Hasanuddin airport in Makassar. The flight schedule from Sultan Hasanuddin airport Makassar to Toraja airport is every Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. The flight from Makassar to Toraja takes 45 minutes.

Toraja airport is located around 30 km from Rantepao and there is no public transport. Make sure you book a pick up before hand.

  • Hire a car with driver
Another option to go to Rantepao, Toraja from Tentena is with charter car. We provide transfer from Makassar to Toraja with an English speaking driver or you can rent a car with English speaking driver to Toraja. Minimum rent for Toraja is 3 days. How to get  to Rantepao, Toraja from Tentena

  • By public transport (bus) 
To get to Rantepao, Toraja from Tentena you can use a bus. There are 3 companies that go from Palu to Rantepao: Rappan Marannu  Ketty, and Batutumonga. These busses leave Palu around 9 am everyday an will be in Tentena Terminal around 4 or 5 pm. The price is between 200-250 per person. 

  • Hire a car with driver
Another option to go to Rantepao, Toraja from Tentena is with charter car. We provide transfer from Tentena to Rantepao, Toraja with an English speaking driver or you can rent a car with English speaking driver to Toraja. Minimum rent for Toraja is 3 days. How to get  to Rantepao, Toraja from Ampana

  • By public transport (bus) 
To get to Rantepao, Toraja from Ampana you must first use minivan to Poso because there is no bus that goes directly to Rantepao, Toraja. After you arrive in Poso, you can get a bus from Palu that goes to Rantepao, Toraja.
  • Hire a car with driver

What To Do In Toraja

  • Lemo



Located 9 km south of Rantepao, Lemo stone graves are still being used by the locals to bury the dead. From far away, you can see wooden effigies or locally known as tau-tau with colorfull dress.

  • Londa



Londa is located 7 km south of Rantepao. To get to the tomb cave, we must descend number of stairs and we will need to rent a lantern from the loccals.

  • Kete Kesu



Kete Kesu is a village with 6 traditional houses called Tongkonan and 12 rice barns called Alang. It is located 4 km south east of Rantepao. Beside of the beautiful houses, you can also see some type of graves behind the Tongkonan houses.

  • Tampang Allo



Natural cave grave that has many erong (wooden coffin), tau-tau (effigy), and hundreds of skeletons. 
 
  • Sarapung



Baby grave near Tampang Allo. The Torajanese believe that infants who died without teeth are pure and have no sin so they buried them in Tarra tree because it produces white sap which resembles breast milk. 

Eating

Most of restaurants are located in Jalan Ahmad Yani and Jalan Andi Mappanyukki in Rantepao. Here are some of them:

Cafe that serves Torajanese food, Indonesian food and western food. It's a cafe and also an art gallery. 

  • Monika Cafe
Serves Torajanese food, Indonesian food, and Pizza. There is live music and you can even sing too, if you'd like.

  • Ayam Penyet Mbak Ria
Serves many choices of Indonesian food and juices. The place is spacious so it's good for a big group.

The Visa on Arrival costs Rp. 500.000 and is valid for 30 days. The Visa on Arrival can get extended once, with 30 days, at a local Immigration Office in Indonesia. The Visa on Arrival cannot be converted into another type of stay permit.

Requirements

  1. Official national passport with a minimum validity of 6 months from the entry date
  2. Copy of a return ticket, or ticket continuing the journey to another country
  3. Show proof of being in the possession of health insurance that covers medical expenses and Covid-19 treatment.
  4. Documents required in accordance with the provisions of the Indonesian Health Protocol issued by the Covid-19 Task Force.
  5. In case of a governmental visit, the traveller must also attach an invitation letter regarding the attending of a meeting / conference issued by the Indonesian Ministry / Department / Institutions concerned.
