Getting to Bira from Makassar

10:50:00 PM

Bira beach located in Bulukumba Regency, around 190 km from Makassar. This beach has powdery white sand.and get spacious at low tide. There are some more beaches in the area, two islands that are best for snorkeling, and if you like diving there are some operators around. Beside the beautiful beaches and underwater live, Bira also offer unique cultures. Like Kajang Tribe that is untouched by modernization and the boatbuilding village in Ara & Tanaberu. The Phinisi boat is usually built using traditional equipment following exact prescribed traditional techniques that have been passed down from generation to generation.

Entrance Fee

Entrance fee of Tanjung Bira is IDR 41.000/ person and only paid once while you are staying here. Always bring the ticket when you leave the beach area. Show the ticket to the staff when it's needed.

Getting There

  • Public transport (Kijang)
Take public transport/ Kijang from Terminal Mallengkeri. It costs IDR 100.000 - 150.000 and it takes around 5-6 hours to get to Bira. The driver will wait until he thinks he has enough passengers.

  • Drop off from Sultan Hasanuddin airport or your hotel
Another option is a drop off from Makassar airport to Bira or drop off from your hotel to Bira. It costs IDR 900.000 for a drop off from Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport in Makassar (max. 4 people). Sleeping

There are many places to stay and mostly near the main road (Jalan Kapongkolan), but if you want more quiet place and located in front of the beach then you should stay in Bara area.
My recommendations are:

  • Riswan Guest House
Located near the main road and only few minutes walking from Bira Beach. The rooms are simple but clean and have attached bathrooms. Riswan and his wife are really friendly.

Riswan Guesthouse
  • Cosmos Bungalows
Located right on Bara Beach. This place has 3 Bungalows for 2 people. Bungalow number one has the best view so it's a bit expensive than the rest. For a bigger group, you can book bungalow number 4, 5, 6, or 7.

Around Bira

  • Apparalang Cliff
Apparalang cliff is a new spot that is getting really famous because of a social media like Instagram. This place is famous with the panoramic sea view from the cliff. The water also has 3 different colors that you won't need a filter to make a good picture. The best time to go is in the morning because it will be really hot at noon and not many trees around.
Apparalang can be reached within 20 minutes. You can rent a motorbike at your guest house.

  • Bara Beach
Bara Beach is more quite than Bira Beach which makes you feel on a private beach. It's a perfect place to relax, sunbathing, or just reading a book. At the weekend there might be some locals camping in this area. You can walk from Bira Beach during low tide.

Bara Beach

  • Kaluku Beach
Kaluku is a Buginese word. It means cocunut. It's suitable for this beach since this beach has many coconut trees. On this beach there are some accomodations too if you want to stay outside Bira area.

Kaluku Beach

  • Liukang Loe Island
A small island in front of Bara Beach. It takes 20-30 minutes to get to this island. Liukang Loe island is famous as a snorkeling place.

Activities

  • Diving
The waters of Bira are particularly popular with sharks, rays, and huge groupers. There are some operators here such as: Blue Planet, Gaia One, etc. Be really carefull to dive here since it has strong currents. If you need any informations about dive packages, I'd be glad to help.

  • Snorkelling
Snorkelling is also impressive off Bira. You can rent a boat to Liukang Loe and Kambing island.
